STEP 6 Search for Internships
or Undergraduate Research
Before you apply for an internship or research position, become a pro at the search process. Define your priorities and start your search early. Many industries begin their recruiting process up to one year in advance!
Your search should begin at least six months prior to your desired start date.

Where To Search
A successful search uses multiple strategies. Use resources like Handshake, LinkedIn, campus recruiting, reputable websites and networking.
If you’re not sure where to start or need help to design your search, make a 1:1 coaching appointment.
Design an Action Plan
A successful search requires an organized action plan. Track the roles, organizations, deadlines and application requirements in one location.
When searching for an internship, it’s time to make your resume public on Handshake so employers can find you.
Any resume marked as “Featured on Profile” or “Visible” in your Handshake profile is accessible to employers and enables them to find your profile and contact you.
Double check that your uploaded resume is the most current version.
Before you apply for an internship, it’s important to tailor your application materials for each role. Get guidance to describe your experiences on your resume in a way that resonates with employers.
Stay open to possibilities during your search.
Organizations hire people with different backgrounds, experiences and skill sets. If you’re locked into the idea of an internship with a specific organization or industry, you may want to broaden your search. It’s possible to find opportunities in industries and organizations you have not previously considered.
“Students should set multiple alerts based around key words, locations and the type of position they are looking for.” – Kylee Vanek, Associate Director, Career Education
