Functional skills, sometimes called “hard” or “technical” skills, are concrete skills, behaviors and knowledge that you build mastery in. These skills require specific technical knowledge or training, and apply to many different work settings.

Kaplan Credigree, is a career-supporting program offering practice exams for industry-recognized credentials that validate a student’s technical skills and expertise in careers including project management, finance, and technology. Career Core by Kaplan is a series of 22 learning modules and live, virtual coaching sessions to help develop skills for career readiness and confidence, at any stage of your career journey. Both programs are self-paced, asynchronous and available online to Wildcats with an active arizona.edu email address through August 1, 2024.

If you are applying for jobs or starting a career in a field that requires or recommends a professional or technical certification, you can gain an edge by investing the time to gain new skills and earn a certificate. Employers will typically indicate if a specialized certification is necessary for the job they’re advertising.

Across majors, industries and roles, transferrable, functional and professional skills are something all employers look for when hiring! No matter your level of experience, showcasing these these skills in your application can open doors and prepare you for success in your career. The more of these skills you can demonstrate, the more your application will stand out.
