Career Fairs 101
For the best experience, learn what to expect and how to prepare before you arrive.
Fairs are welcome to all students, from all majors. If you are early in your career journey plan to stop by! It’s a great opportunity to get a feel for what a career fair looks and feels like. If you’re in an active search, research the registered organizations ahead of time and remember that employers could be hiring for roles across majors or interests. For example, employers at the Education Fair could also be hiring for roles in marketing, accounting, music, languages and more. Attending more than one fair can expose you to career paths and opportunities you may not have considered.
Students and alumni should not expect to leave the fair having received an interview or job offer. Students who participate and engage with organizations can expect to leave with contact information and a professional connection.
What The Experience Looks Like

View of a career fair in the Bear Down Building.
Career fairs are held in a large open space with up to 65 tables tables where representatives from organizations from a variety of industries and interests are set up to speak with students and alumni. These tables will be decorated by the organization with signage, company information and many will have branded swag that you can take with you.
When You Arrive

Checking in at a career fair.
At the entrance, you will be greeted by our staff and asked to check in using your CatCard or student ID number. You’ll receive a printed name tag. You can scan a QR code to view a list of employers and a floor map of the space. Plan to visit organizations of interest and allow time for exploration too. Typically, our office will set up a “Prep Zone” where you can ask questions, get a quick resume review, or learn more about career development opportunities and campus resources.
Visiting With Employers

When you arrive at their table, you and a representative will have an introductory conversation. Be prepared to introduce yourself. The representative may share information about their organization and open positions. They may ask you questions about your background, interests and qualifications. Employers notice and enjoy when students initiate the conversation. For organizations that you are familiar with, be sure to mention something you’ve learned about the organization or why you might be interested in applying for a position there. Be specific. For organizations that you don’t know about, this is an opportunity to learn more.
These in-person interactions typically last about 2-3 minutes, but can last longer if time permits. The representative will typically indicate to you when it’s time for them to engage with the next student. They may wrap up with a request for action, like applying for a role online or contacting them at their professional email address. If you’re unclear, you can request direct next steps.
If you make a connection, this is a great time to share your resume.
