Handshake is U of A’s online career platform that connects students with employers and career centers and is used by over 300,000 employers looking for university-level talent; students already have an account and can log in with their NetID and password, and the platform is limited to trusted employers, helping avoid scams while recommending opportunities tailored to your interests. It serves as a hub for career-related resources, including networking events, workshops, employer information sessions, and career research through job descriptions and employer pages with reviews and interview tips. Completing your profile is important because the more you use Handshake, the smarter it gets, improving recommendations and allowing employers to find you, view your profile, download your resume, and send invitations to opportunities—students with completed profiles are five times more likely to be messaged. You can complete your profile by using the auto-upload feature from your resume and including a photo (optional), at least one experience, one organization, one skill, and a polished resume, with the option to upload multiple versions. Now, your photo doesn’t have to be professional—just make sure it’s a clear photo of you with a background that’s appropriate and not too distracting. Just remember to keep it up to date as you develop interests, gain experience, or adjust your graduation date so that you can get the most out of what Handshake can do for you.
