Career Core by Kaplan: Resumes and Cover Letters (Topic 21)

Recommended for students and alumni who want to perfect their resumes and cover letters as part of an active job or internship search.

If you haven’t already completed the first half of Representing Yourself Professionally (Topic 13), go there to get started before jumping into this topic. Then, as you progress through this topic, you’ll be directed back to other relevant resources you’ve developed.

Customizing these documents may seem time-consuming, or you may feel unclear as to how helpful customized resumes and cover letters are. This topic will break down why this is an important step in applying and how to set up a resume repository you can use as a starting block.

Note: If you are planning to pursue higher education rather than moving straight into the workforce, this topic is still for you! Most applications for graduate schools will require some type of essay or letter of intent, and the skills you’ll practice in this section are transferable to that situation as well. And you can always reach out to your career services or academic advisor for more detailed assistance.
