Biosphere 2 is the world’s largest laboratory experiment in the interdisciplinary Earth sciences with the Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) experiment being the flagship of the experimental facility. Understanding the process interactions and feedback among water, porous geological media, microbes, and vascular plants, is crucial for improving predictions of the response of Earth’s critical zone to future climatic conditions.

We are seeking an undergraduate individual for the role of Engineering student worker through the VIP program. This position will supplement the permanent Research Engineer/Scientist and offer work experience in a research setting. This position may be paid with Federal Work Study or course credit only through the VIP.

Biosphere 2 – LEO project recently joined the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Program, https://tinyurl.com/4v8fuw4t. We look towards integrating the VIP framework to effectively manage multidisciplinary teams led by various faculty members. This framework enhances higher education by engaging undergraduate and graduate students in ambitious, long-term, large-scale, multidisciplinary project teams that are led by faculty for multiple semesters or years. Students can earn course credit which is based on the scale of the project and the student’s involvement or the option of pay (Federal Work-Study or grant) in lieu of credit.

Position-related responsibilities

  • Assist with daily maintenance operations of sensor network
  • Participate in shadowing activities and provide support to resident engineers, data scientists, and senior staff.
  • Under the supervision of resident engineers and senior staff, the Student Intern will aid with various projects, procedures, and innovative endeavors.
  • Offer support for additional tasks or assignments as required.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Programming: HTML, C, C++, Python (at least one)
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Time management skills in performing multiple projects.
  • Valid Driver’s license and own transportation to Biosphere 2.
  • Proficient with Microsoft O365 products

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Circuit and electronic troubleshooting experience
  • Physics/Statics/Mechanical fundamentals
  • Hands-on fabrication experience with various hand tools and power tools
  • Be able to work in physically demanding environments, including varying temperatures and humidities.
  • Comfortable working at heights
