Biosphere 2 is the world’s largest laboratory experiment in the interdisciplinary Earth sciences with the Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) experiment being the flagship of the experimental facility. Understanding the process interactions and feedback among water, porous geological media, microbes, and vascular plants, is crucial for improving predictions of the response of Earth’s critical zone to future climatic conditions.

We are seeking multiple highly motivated undergraduate individuals for the roles of Engineering or Science Technician student workers. This position will supplement the permanent Research Engineer and Technician which offers work experience in a research setting.

Please tailor your application to one of the two positions only. Applications to both positions will not be accepted.

Technician:

  1. Assist with daily maintenance operations
  2. Assist with any on-going experiments, projects, procedures, and innovative endeavors
  3. Offer support for additional tasks or assignments as required.

Technician Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Time management skills in performing multiple projects.
  • Valid Driver’s license and own transportation to Biosphere 2.
  • Proficient with Microsoft O365 products
  • Hands-on fabrication experience with various hand tools and power tools
  • Be able to work in physically demanding environments, including varying temperatures and humidities.
  • Comfortable working at heights

Technician Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Science background

Engineer:

  1. Assist with daily maintenance operations
  2. Assist with any engineering specific tasks and projects
  3. Offer support for additional tasks or assignments as required.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Programming: C, C++, Python (at least one)
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Time management skills in performing multiple projects.
  • Valid Driver’s license and own transportation to Biosphere 2.
  • Proficient with Microsoft O365 products
  • Hands-on fabrication experience with various hand tools and power tools
  • Be able to work in physically demanding environments, including varying temperatures and humidities.
  • Comfortable working at heights

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Circuit and electronic troubleshooting experience
  • Physics/Statics/Mechanical fundamentals
