The Humanities Seminars Program is the premier community outreach program within the College of Humanities offering the highest-quality education in letters, arts, and sciences to adult lifelong learning students in Tucson and around the world. The faculty are present and former tenured University of Arizona professors selected for their scholarly accomplishments as well as superior teaching ability. Class topics range widely: history, literature, archaeology, music, classics, science, and more. Courses run in the spring, fall, and summer, with two- and three-hour courses meeting once a week for four, five, or ten weeks. The Dorothy Rubel Room at the UA Poetry Center is the on-campus home of the Humanities Seminars Program.

Primary Job Focus:

The Humanities Seminars Program is hiring a Student Worker AV Assistant to support in-person classes held in the Rubel Room at the UA Poetry Center. This position assists with audiovisual setup and operations during live seminars and provides basic technical support to students and instructors. This role is well-suited for students interested in audiovisual technology, live event support, media production, or technical troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Multimedia Specialist with setup and operation of cameras, video, sound, and lighting equipment for Humanities Seminars Program classes.
  • After training, independently operate AV equipment during classes while the Multimedia Specialist completes other tasks.
  • Troubleshoot basic technical issues related to theatrical or studio-style video, sound, and lighting systems (training provided).
  • Assist students—many of whom are elderly adults—with accessing the UA network, HSP’s Learning Portal, and basic classroom technology.
  • Help instructors and students resolve basic technical issues on phones or computers (iOS, Android, macOS, Windows).
  • Remain attentive and ready to respond quickly to technical or classroom needs throughout each class session.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • 10-15 hours of availability during working hours (M-F | 9 AM-5 PM). We specifically need availability on Thursday Mornings, 9 AM -12 PM.
  • Our program generally operates during normal business hours (with some potential nights and weekends, although this is rare)
  • Reliable and self-motivated

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Interest or experience in audiovisual equipment, live events, media production, or IT/technical support.
  • Familiarity with iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows operating systems.
  • Strong communication skills and a patient, service-oriented attitude.
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to stay focused during live events.
  • Prior AV or theater/studio experience is helpful but not required.
  • Work Study Eligible, not required, but are Highly Encouraged to apply

Training Provided

Comprehensive training will be provided. The student worker will begin under supervision, with the goal of operating classroom AV systems independently.
