The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Research Assistant / Yoga Group Leader to deliver a yoga protocol online in a feasibility trial to groups of patients (including patients with chronic pain, Alzheimer’s disease, or Lyme’s disease) in a series of small pilot studies. The Research Assistant/Yoga Group Leader will work with other yoga instructors under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Bayley.

The Bayley lab, located at the Palo Alto VA, is focused on using mind body interventions, such as yoga and meditation, for rehabilitation treatments for chronic pain and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This is a part-time (8 hours a week), non-exempt (hourly-paid) position. Benefits:

PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved Without Compensation (WOC) appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.

Duties:

  • Develop teleyoga protocol suitable for online delivery
  • Prepare materials for each yoga session
  • Instruct and educate participants in yoga techniques as described in the research protocol
  • Answer questions from participants
  • Document findings from each meeting and enter data into the databases
  • Advise and consult with other research staff regarding the recruitment, screening, and enrollment of study subjects
  • Serve as a backup for other Research Assistant Yoga Leaders
  • Other research related duties as necessary.

Requirements:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED is required.

CERTIFICATION: Registered Yoga Alliance teacher and/or Yoga Certification with Yoga Alliance is required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: at least 1 year of related experience, including instructing yoga techniques;
  • Desired: Experience working with a patient population with chronic health problems.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Interest or experience in therapeutic yoga;
  • Experience working with veterans preferred but not necessary;
  • Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the research field;
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills;
  • Strong public speaking skills;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.

Physical Demands: Lifting up to 15 lbs occasionally, regular typing/repetitive motion;

Environmental Conditions: Exposure to office environment.
