I’ve been a Wildcat my entire life, and just graduated this May from the University of Arizona with a degree in English and a minor in French, and will be attending the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, next fall to earn my Master’s degree in English Literature.
When I heard about this great opportunity to work in the Governor’s office as an intern, I jumped at the chance to see behind the scenes of state government. Governor Ducey’s Southern Arizona Office oversees the Governor’s priorities in the seven southern counties of Arizona. We are responsible for representing Governor Ducey’s values and priorities, planning events and visits by Governor Ducey to Southern Arizona, and ensuring that constituent needs are heard from all around the state. I’ve been able to be a part of several events. Last winter, I joined the Governor’s team for a two-day visit to Yuma for the annual Legislative Agriculture tour. This even also included a tour of the historical prison in Yuma and the signing of a new agreement with the State Parks Department.
Although every day looks different here in the Governor’s office, I thought it might be fun to take you through a “day in the life!”
9:00 am: the day begins!
When you walk into the office, you’re greeted by this lovely portrait of Governor Ducey. Looking good, boss!
9:05 am: settling in.
I log into my computer, check my emails, and make a list of the projects for the day. Sometimes there’s nametags to make for meetings, research on future events to be done, or events to go to.
10:00 am: the phone rings!
A big part of my job is hearing from constituents about their thoughts and concerns. We receive calls from people all over the state regarding legislative and state issues, allowing their voices and opinions to be heard. The Governor’s office acts as a kind of liaison between constituents and other government offices, like the Department of Economic Security or the Department of Child Services. When someone calls with a problem or concern, we make sure that they get the answers and help that they need!
Another big part of my job at the Governor’s office was tracking local and current events. I sort through the newspapers to find articles about Southern Arizona and compiled lists of current news and events each day to make sure our office was up-to-date on everything happening around us.
Once everything’s checked off my list, and if there’s no events to head out to, then at 1:00 I leave for the next part of my day.
Working at this office was a fabulous experience! Because we’re a smaller office, I found a tight-knit community full of people who shared my values and commitments. I was able to travel around this beautiful state of Arizona and hear from people from all walks of life. I grew in important communication skills, built new relationships, and gained hands-on political experience. The great news is, we’re always looking for new faces to join Governor Ducey’s team! If this experience sounds like something you’d enjoy, feel free to call our office at 520.628.6580 and ask about becoming an intern yourself.
Well, it’s been fun! Thanks for reading through this whole post, and I hope you have a fabulous day!
