The Dream Careers program stood out to me because of the support they would give me in both finding an internship and throughout the duration of the summer. The program provided housing, transportation to work, some meals, various weekend trips and activities, the support of the dream careers staff and so much more. I ended up choosing the London program because I knew that there would always be a new part of the city to explore. London has so much rich history while at the same time being one of the leading cities for business in the world.
After committing to the program, I worked with an internship advisor to help me get an interview with a company in my desired field of work. I ended up having a phone interview for a Print and Digital Marketing internship with Dennis Publishing. Although I was nervous at first, working with the internship advisor allowed me to be prepared and confident enough for the interview. Before interviewing, it is important to do research about the company and the position you are applying for, so that you can plan for potential questions they might ask you. I recommend having a couple of cheat sheets in front of you while doing a phone interview. When I did my phone interview, I had my resume, a description of the job I was applying to and the research I had done about the company in front of me. It was helpful to review each item before the interview and I was able to glance at them during the phone call if I needed to. After accepting the internship, I started the UK visa process with the help of another Dream Careers advisor. Although there are many steps in the process, the advisor was constantly guiding me to make sure everything was done on time.
Living and working in London was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I quickly adapted to navigating the city by utilizing the underground tube. I am thankful that I took advantage of the 8 weeks I spent there by constantly exploring the city and checking mostly every item off my London bucket list. Living in London allowed me to explore nearby cities and even countries. In the UK, I was able to go to the town of Bath and the City of Brighton. I also had the opportunity to travel outside of the UK to Paris and Amsterdam. Although 8 weeks seems like a long time, it goes by very quickly, so you have to make every day count!
