The best candidate has a variety of different skill sets, is strategically well rounded, and most importantly, the best candidate has relevant experiences in which they demonstrate the skill set and qualifications matching the job description.
There is a difference between collecting random skills and strategically gaining new experiences. Where do you start? Identify the skills that will be most important for your future career so you can go out and build them!
Find your Skill Gaps & Reverse Engineer your Resume
Start by finding a job posting with a prospective company you would be interested in working for in the future. Although you are not applying just yet, you can use the job description to highlight skills and experiences the position requires.
Next, take inventory of your resume. What valuable skills and qualities do you already possess—and what are you missing?
Finally, search for opportunities in your network (your college, around campus and in the community) to build those skills and qualities. Over time, your resume will match the requirements you saw on the job posting. This will help you become a better candidate and reverse engineer your resume for the job you want!

Reflect on your Experiences
Boosting your resume is not limited to new experiences. Think about your strengths and the skill sets you already have. Now look at your resume. Are your strengths, skills, and qualifications clearly represented? Look at each bullet point and ask yourself, why is this piece of information important to the reader? Does this bullet point illustrate my strengths, achievements, and skill sets that make me a best candidate? Don’t forget the many experiences that you can include to show your skill set: class projects, courses, volunteer experiences, professional organizations, clubs and campus involvement, just to name a few.
