Design Thinking offers a new way of seeing, understanding and operating in the world. It is a robust process which involves empathetic, human-centered observation, critical research and analysis, innovation, and experimentation. With an emphasis on visualizing information and testing ideas, the fundamental principles of Design Thinking can be applied to a wide variety of academic disciplines and professional sectors.
Across the United States, academic institutions, corporate businesses and non-profit organizations have launched Design Thinking programs aimed at targeting our most ‘wicked problems’ where faculty, students, and citizens work collaboratively through experiential learning opportunities and service-based experimentation.
The University of Arizona Student Engagement and Career Development team is launching its second Design Thinking Challenge focused on creating more awareness to our campus community about our energy consumption behaviors to offer suggestions to decrease our environmental footprint.
Do you have what it takes to tackle this spring’s challenge? Read below to find out.
Step 1- grab a few teammates or meet some new ones
This is a chance for you to join a few people who share a common interest as you to better yourself and your campus community and signing up for the Design Thinking Challenge together. Design Thinking lends itself to an interdisciplinary approach, so consider creating a team of people who have different majors and areas of expertise than your own. Don’t have team? You can sign up by yourself or with a friend and join others to create one, or we’ll add you to an existing team. Either way, you’ll work with others and perhaps make a new connection along the way.
Step 2- get to know the underground campus
Did you know that there are over 6 miles of underground tunneling and facilities which provide everything from the water in the rec center pool to the energy which powers your chemistry lab? The first event to kickoff the Design Thinking Challenge will include an exclusive tour of the underground facilities which make it possible to run this campus. Check here for the dates and mark your calendar for a perspective of the UA most have not seen before!
Step 3- Win the Challenge and win over your future employers
Now that you’re in it to win it, it’s time to start the first stages of the Design Thinking process- Empathazing and Ideating. This process is essential to the human-centered component of the challenge. There are many solutions out there, and it is up to you and your team to generate the best possible combinations of them to meet the needs of your client!
The winning teams who generate the best solutions determined by a panel of expert judges will win cash prizes as well as access to opportunities to network with campus stakeholders invested in bringing their solutions to life. Registration opens on Handshake on February 2nd.
