Building Connections and Confidence: How an Internship Shaped My Problem-Solving Skills and Ties to the Tucson Community

I enrolled in the program because I wanted to get involved in the Tucson community, and to have a chance to meet other people. When working with my group of peers we were all experiencing the internship for the first time and were working on something that none of us had specified knowledge on. Being that I have never exactly worked within an interdisciplinary group before, seeing how each of us brought something different to the table was helpful. In a way, because we all had different strengths it was easier to work as a group. As well as because we were all trying to understand the topic of our challenge, it made us closer as an intern group. We were all in when trying to gain a better understanding of what was being asked of us, and how it can possibly become a reality.

Before going into this internship, I was never comfortable with sharing problem-solving ideas or any ideas in group situations. My mentors made us understand that every idea was a good idea that would not go unseen. The mentos made sure to create an environment where we could talk freely, while trying different forms of brainstorming to help us along the way. Outside of the internship, my group went a few social gatherings throughout the duration of the internship. Where would just get to know each other a little better outside of the working environment. We would grab dinner with each other every now and then after meetings or try to hang out at school events.

As an Architect major, it is important to look at all aspects when designing a project. Like whom is for, what will the program be, how will it affect the local community and so on. Critical thinking is an important part of that that I was able to take away from this experience. The process of thinking we learned from this program has helped me come up with better design program and solutions.

When telling other students about this program, I share that it has taught me a lot and allowed me to be a part of the Tucson community. Another thing I would tell other students who go through this program is do not be afraid to share the ideas you have, or to make connections. This program is about helping the Tucson community find solutions to problems they may be facing, so it is best to put everything you got into solving the challenge!
