Looking for a job is stressful! You submit countless applications, tailor your resume for each job, write cover letters, interview, and then wait…sometimes months to hear back from potential employers. Searching for a job is quite a journey. It is easy to forget to take care of ourselves in the process. Here are six self-care strategies to practice as you embark on a job seeking journey.
1. Pace yourself.
Looking for a job requires you to do many tasks at once. Create realistic goals for yourself and be sure to schedule time for breaks.
2. Stay away from negative self-talk.
Don’t question the value of your experiences if you receive rejections from potential employers. Focus on moving forward.
3. Get rest.
Be sure that you maintain a regular sleep schedule while on the job market. Good rest will help to decrease brain fatigue.
4. Take care of your body.
Remember to get exercise and eat nourishing foods. Exercise can be taking a walk, swimming, or yoga. Exercise can help you get through the stressful times that arise while looking for a job.
5. Let go of what you can’t control.
Once you have submitted your application or participated in interviews, let go. You have done all that you can on your part.
6. Celebrate small victories.
Did you submit another application? Did you get an interview? Celebrate by doing something you enjoy or indulging in a favorite treat.
