A Streamlined Guide to More Effective Networking

For many students and professionals, “networking” can be a scary concept. However, networking is really just about making connections! Whether you’re feeling nervous about networking, are excited about networking but don’t know where to start, or want to perfect your networking skills, Career Core by Kaplan is here for you! Career Core is the University of Arizona’s partner to help Wildcats get career-ready, no matter their starting point. Here are 5 topics to guide you:

Topic 5 – Professional Relationships Basics

Learn about and practice the fundamentals of networking.

Topic 11 – Informational Interviewing in Depth

Level up your informational interviewing skills. EVERY student should conduct at least one informational interview (also called a Career Conversation).

Topic 12 – Networking Tools

Upgrade your online networking profiles and become an active participant on networking platforms.

Topic 13 – Representing Yourself Professionally

Connect with recruiters at a career fair.

Topic 20 – Activating Professional Relationships

Learn how to activate your network as part of your search for a job or other opportunity.

We in SECD strongly recommend that you conduct at least one informational interview (also known as a career conversation) during your time here, using the skills learned in Topic 11. The professionals featured on each Career Cluster community page (here’s an example from Data & Technology) are all open to career conversations.

If you have not logged on to Kaplan Career Core yet, your first log in (using your university netid and password) will take you to the home page to set up your account. Then select “Kaplan Career Core” from the dashboard, and then “Curriculum Outline” and “Shortcuts” to take you to this learning path. After your first login the links will take you directly to each topic.
