Major: Political Science, Mexican American Studies
Internship site: Mil Mujeres Legal Services
Role: Legal Intern
As an intern at Mil Mujeres Legal Services, I have gained my first experience working in an immigration law setting. This internship experience taught me the skills of online communication, online networking, legal writing, and so much more. I was able to learn more about the importance of creating a client-focused environment within a legal setting. As a legal intern, I spent my days completing multiple tasks that included assisting clients on their path to life here in the United States.
By taking the time to process mail received at our offices for clients, I have learned more about how clients are informed when their Legal Permanent Resident Cards, Employment authorization cards, receipts, etc., have arrived. By typing up expedite applications for clients, I have learned about legal writing and the importance of details and language within these documents. Mil Mujeres has taught me the importance of understanding the changing laws of immigration. Researching the changing policies of immigration that have been enacted by our current president has led me to understand the urgency in learning all new policies that are introduced.
Being able to assist clients in building a life here in the United States is something I have always wanted to do. It was meaningful to me that I got to wake up every day and participate in an internship at Mil Mujeres. My internship at Mil Mujeres has reassured me of my path towards immigration law. Through this experience and two informational interviews with immigration lawyers within the Tucson area, I am certain I would like to continue my path to becoming an immigration attorney after graduation.
