The Fall 2009 semester is officially under way. Do you know where your resume is? You WILL be needing it! Don't have one? Need a brush-up? Get in to your UA Career Services office for assistance and guidance with resume writing, interviewing skills, and effective internship and job search strategies. Do not wait! Be forewarned though, Fall Semester is no time to be caught asleep at the wheel, especially in times like these. The earlier you start planning your career, the better off you will be. Freshman? There is no need for any UA student to face this job market by themselves. This really is YOUR Career Services office. Top employers from government agencies, corporations and nonprofit organizations will actually be coming to campus seeking YOU for internship and job opportunities. But, you can't win if you don't play! Find your situation below to learn how to get going with Campus Interviewing. What should I do in preparation for CAMPUS INTERVIEWING for Fall 2009? If you haven't done so already, ALL continuing Campus Interviewing students need to update their Wildcat JobLink profile and resume with any changes (GPA, address, phone, etc.). Beyond that, find your scenario below for further instructions: My expected graduation date is December 2009, May 2010 or August 2010 and... I am currently registered for Campus Interviewing: In this case you are eligible to interview for both internships AND full-time professional positions. Drop by the Career Services office and pay the one-time, non-refundable $25 program fee. If you have already paid the one-time fee before, then you do not need to do it again. Staff will activate your account so that you have access to both internships and full-time professional interviews at the time we receive the program fee. I am NOT currently registered for Campus Interviewing: In this case you are eligible to interview for both internships AND full-time professional positions. Since you are not currently registered, the first thing you must do is complete the online Student Campus Interviewing Orientation. After completing the online orientation, stop by the Career Services office and pay the one-time, non-refundable $25 program fee. Staff will activate your account so that you have access to both internships and full-time professional interviews. My expected graduation date is December 2010 or after and... I am currently registered for Campus Interviewing: In this case you are eligible to interview for internship positions only. Be sure that your Wildcat JobLink information and resume are up to date and good luck with Fall Campus Interviewing! I am NOT currently registered for Campus Interviewing: In this case you are eligible to interview for internship positions only. Since you are not currently registered, the first thing you must do is to complete the online Student Campus Interviewing Orientation. I graduate(d) in August 2009 or earlier Recent alumni are eligible to participate in Campus Interviewing for up to two calendar years post-graduation. There are currently still a few students with unresolved "no-shows" in Campus Interviewing. When you have a "no-show" you are immediately blocked from the Campus Interviewing section of the Wildcat JobLink system. You must take care of your no-shows before you will be unblocked. Procedures for dealing with no-shows are detailed in the "Job Search Guide" that you were given at the time you registered. After you resolve your no-show situation, then you can follow the steps above. ANNOUNCEMENTS UA Fall Career Services Kick-Off Don't miss the UA Fall Career Days Kick-Off with its focus on Campus Interviewing this coming Wednesday, September 16th, 2009, from 11 am to 2 pm in the Career Services offices in Suite 411 on the Fourth Floor of the Student Union Memorial Center. You will find information on how best to "work" the upcoming career fair and how to maximize your interviewing opportunities through our convenient Campus Interviewing Program. Grab a FREE slice of pizza and a soda, talk with representatives of several government agencies about employment and internship opportunities, find out what to wear, where to go and who you can talk to at the fair. ***************************** UA Fall Career Days 2009 - The biggest fair of the Fall! Mark these dates and times: September 23 (1pm - 6pm) & September 24 (11am - 4pm). By Jack Perry, MA, NCC, MCC Senior Career Counselor/Coordinator GRAD CORNER Barriers Recently, in my travels around campus, I've been challenged by a number of barriers. You may not travel in the same parts of campus as I do, but you can’t help but notice that there are several construction projects underway, including two new residence halls. There's a lot of "in-fill" around campus and it seems that surface lots are disappearing faster than an Eegee's on a hot summer day. While dealing with change and loss of the familiar may be disconcerting, or even downright frustrating, it illustrates an issue that each of us has to deal with from time to time . . . barriers. By definition, a barrier is . . . "an object or set of objects that separate, demarcate, impede, restrict or hinder free movement". In your life as a graduate student, a barrier may not be so much a physical object as it is a routine, a habit, a principle or a state of mind. Some barriers may be permanent, but many are temporary and while some may be thrust upon us, many are self imposed. I would suggest that what we often see as barriers, are more often merely obstacles. The word obstacle comes from the Latin and literally means "to stand in front of". An obstacle is something that impedes progress or achievement and it can be a synonym for barrier. Perhaps the difference is our attitude or mental approach. When I hear the word obstacle, my mind tends to associate it with obstacle course. An obstacle course is a training course with a series of obstacles that must be negotiated or overcome. I think that graduate school definitely qualifies as an obstacle course. Barriers or obstacles are nearly inevitable. The question becomes how can we best respond to those obstacles? Often our responses begin with anger or frustration and end with resignation. I would like to propose that our best response is resolve. Reflect on the obstacle, size it up and try to gain as complete an understanding of it as possible. Once you have a clear picture of the obstacle you can more accurately judge what’s an appropriate response. A comprehensive understanding of the obstacle allows you to recognize what you can control and what you cannot. Part of your response to any obstacle is to know what resources you have available to deal with that obstacle. This too, is part of sizing up the obstacle. When you recognize that you can't handle some obstacles by yourself, you need to know where to get help. Take advantage of campus resources. And if you don't know what resources are available on campus, make it your mission to find out. Career Services is one of many resources on campus available to help you confront obstacles as you negotiate the obstacle course known as grad school. We can help you with everything from reviewing your CV to helping you figure out where your degree can take you. Check out our web page and take advantage of all we have to offer. HOT TOPICS this week focuses on a big group of employers that many students and alumni often overlook...colleges and universities! CAMPUS INTERVIEWING...are you registered yet? All students of all majors are welcome and highly encouraged to register to access outstanding internships and jobs. Opportunity is knocking...answer it! HOT TOPICS A "Wild" Career Idea With the job market scraping along rock-bottom, savvy job seekers are taking a look outside of the proverbial box for opportunities. Employers that you may not have considered before might just be worth investigating. Hospitals, HMO's, government agencies, nonprofit organizations are all potential employers with a wide variety of career opportunities. Even our beloved University of Arizona hosts a great diversity of professional positions that you may not have thought of. What kinds of careers are available at colleges and universities? The easy answer is "just about everything you can name". Careers range from tenure-track faculty, to business, graphics, publishing, information technology, events planning, public relations, human resources, facilities/operations, and on and on! What about healthcare, research, law enforcement, libraries, museums, fine and performing arts? Really, you can think of a large university as a city within a city, with practically all of the career options you can imagine. What are the benefits of working at a college or university? Aside from a usually beautiful and comfortable work environment, colleges and universities offer pay, benefits, and stability comparable to other government careers. An additional benefit is that most colleges and universities in the U.S. offer some kind of tuition discount or waiver for employees and their families. If you are thinking about more education in your future, this can be a great benefit. Technical Careers From computer network administrators, to biological researchers, to tech-savvy system managers, technical careers abound at colleges and universities. Look around the campus. It is nearly impossible to think of a building or department that DOESN'T house technical and/or scientific professionals. Business Careers A university is a highly complex organization with a definite business side. Some of the business functions of a university include: accounting, finance, human resources, fund development, marketing, public relations, retail services, food service operations, building and maintenance operations, student programs, government relations, and many others. Add in a massive Health Sciences Center like the one we have here at UA and you open up the whole area of healthcare administration as well. Liberal and Fine Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences Colleges and universities offer programs and services to students, employees, and the public. There are cultural programs and services, campus activities departments, academic departments, libraries, museums, art galleries, publishing, and performing arts centers. All are staffed by dedicated professionals seeking to provide the highest caliber and quality services. Where can I find opportunities? If your goal is to gain relevant career experience, you should look at student employment opportunities on the Wildcat JobLink system. It is the central student employment resource for the UA campus. If your goal is full or part-time professional employment, you should check out the UA Human Resources Web site. HOT TOPICS this week focuses on how to follow-up with the recruiters you had a significant meeting with at the UA Fall Career Days 2009. CAMPUS INTERVIEWING ...are you registered yet? All students of all majors are welcome and highly encouraged to register to access outstanding internships and jobs. Opportunity is knocking...answer it! HOT TOPICS After the Career Fair We hope that you had a chance to attend the UA Career Days on Sept. 22 and 23 and met many of the 200 employers in attendance. Approximately 3300 students attended the two day event and the feedback from employers on the student turnout was a hit! If you had a significant connection with an employer and either received their business card or exchanged emails, check below to see what you should do AFTER the UA Career Days event. Send a thank you to the employer Draft a thank you note to send to the employers you were able to have a significant conversation with and who gave you a business card or gave you their email address. You can send the thank you note (handwritten or typed) via snail mail, email the employer, or call the employer. DO NOT misspell the company name or the employers name on your thank you card/envelope or email. Include anything you forgot to mention when talking to the employer at the career fair. Attempt to send your thank you within 48 – 72 hours of the career fair. If an employer contacts you and requests additional information, send it ASAP! Thank you note example: Dear Ms. Marshall, My name is Wilma Wildcat and I want to thank you for speaking with me at UA Career Days last week. I am very excited about the sales and management internship program with General Mills, and I plan to apply for your program through UA Career Services. This week's HOT TOPIC focuses on conducting a successful JOB SEARCH . CAMPUS INTERVIEWING ...has many resume submission deadlines approaching. Don't miss out! Career Tools looks at the Wildcat e-Folio system. HOT TOPIC Now, about that JOB SEARCH... You’ve taken the time to create, proof, rewrite and finalize the masterpiece that is your resume. Now comes the hard part – the job search. This is the activity that will feel like another three credit course which can and will zap your energy. Tackle your job search with a keen sense of focus, a great deal of organization and persistence. Be sure to: Take time to identify your personal values and career experiences, interests, goals, skills and accomplishments. Look at the industries that employ your major or specific skill sets. Examine the things that will make you happy in a work place – company volunteer opportunities, professional development training, mentoring for new hires, tuition reimbursement. Questions to consider: Are you interested in a large company that can offer a greater variety of training programs and career paths? Are you interested in a smaller company that can offer positions with broader authority, responsibility and closer working relationships? Are you restricting your options because you won’t consider living in another state? Have you taken the time to look at the cost of living in various areas of the country? Organize your job search by determining a target date that you’d like to have a job. Perhaps you’d like to have a job (internship or full-time) in hand before May 2010 finals week. Backtrack to this week and take a look at your calendar to schedule in blocks of time for the job search. You’ll need two to three hour blocks of time, at the very least, to spend sourcing for employers, filling out company profiles and applying for positions. As you read job descriptions, ask yourself: What skills do I have that match the requirements of the job? What are two or three strengths I have that would give me an advantage in getting this position? What relevant work experiences qualify me to perform the targeted position? Design a tracking system that will help you monitor each position you apply for online or employer/friend/professor you hand your resume to. This week’s HOT TOPIC focuses on Social Networking Grad Corner – Becoming a Mentor Magnet Career Tools looks at Career Development Certificate Program HOT TOPICS Social Networking Social networking sites have mushroomed since they first appeared beginning in 2002. LinkedIn and Spoke.com are just two online social networks for professional where you can meet peers and make corporate connections. These types of sites can be helpful to find out more about your career field, training and jobs. Since these are professional social sites it’s easier to discuss your career interests, skills, and future goals with network members. Many employers are also using these professional networking sites to search for new employees and to establish business relationships and contacts. Some are also using these web sites to check out potential candidates. Imagine the surprise they have in store with some of the images and writing they see: excessive alcohol use and/or under-aged drinking risky behavior derogatory comments drug use revealing/nude photos employment bashing Behaviors that raise eyebrows and instill concern about your character are serious business for many employers. If an employer is to take the information they see as true and honest behavior then questions about your judgment, maturity and professionalism come into play. An employer may find that those behaviors go against the values of the company. Our internet savvy world does not allow us to live in a vacuum. Information on the internet is available for all – whether you like it or not. Be prepared for any prying eyes. Be careful of the type of information you make available for the world to see. Be mindful of the image it presents especially if you are actively seeking employment (internship or full-time). Social networking can be a wonderful way to keep in touch with old and new friends, and it can be a wonderful career networking tool, but some discretion is a good thing. LinkedIn LinkedIn is an interconnected network of experienced professionals from around the world, representing 170 industries and 200 countries. http://www.linkedin.com/ Spoke.com Spoke makes it easy for business people to discover and gain access to other business people via detailed contact information and professional networking. http://www.spoke.com/ GRAD CORNER Becoming a "Mentor Magnet" Among the many challenges of graduate school is the task of developing those personal and professional relationships that help one to build a body of work that will allow you to launch a professional career. While we often hear about the importance of networking, we tend to forget about mentors and the significant role they can play in our professional development. It’s a good idea to re-visit the mentor/protégé relationship and how we can make the most of it. It’s unlikely that there’s a graduate student out there who doesn’t want a dynamic and inspiring mentor to challenge, encourage and motivate them to excel in their field. While this is a superb ideal, it is, in reality, only that – an ideal. Few faculty can stand up to students’ expectations of mentoring. Demands on faculty time from research, teaching, service and the demands of our fellow students places severe limits on the mentoring capacity of most faculty. So what’s a grad student to do? First and foremost, don’t give up hope. Mentors - strong, influential and supportive mentors – do exist. But like any other relationship, mentors need to be cultivated. And just how does one cultivate a mentor? Consider what you can do to attract a mentor. Be a worthy and promising scholar. Do your reading, keep up with your assignments, develop a sense of curiosity about the work your mentor does. Develop good research practice and work on research that extends, expands or compliments your mentor’s work. You can do work that helps their work reach a wider audience. In other words, you can help yourself along by helping them along. Another aspect of mentorship you need to consider relates to expectations. A good mentor may offer you sound advice regarding your research, but offer little, if any, personal encouragement. Recognize this as an opportunity to appreciate and make use of their insights while seeking encouragement elsewhere. Mentors cannot be all things to all students. Re-adjust your expectations and your satisfaction with your mentor may improve tremendously! It may be necessary (and advantageous)to develop several mentors, each of whom can offer unique support for your various needs. Remember that above all else, good communication is the key to any relationship. Learning how and when to ask for help will facilitate getting the response you need from your mentor. Be aware of your mentors schedule, deadlines they’re dealing with, grants they’re writing, presentations they’re making. If you want your mentor to be responsive to your needs, it’s in your best interest to be respectful of their needs as well. A healthy relationship with a mentor(s) can be a benefit, not only to your academic career, but to your professional career as well. Cultivate that relationship, strengthen your skills and attentiveness as a protégé, and you’ll find that you can indeed become a “mentor magnet”. This week’s HOT TOPIC focuses on Interviewing Tips Career Tools looks at Spin the Wheel of Careers HOT TOPICS Interviewing Tips Prepare for the interview: Make an appointment to have a mock interview with the Career Services office to prepare you for the types of behavioral questions that will be asked. Compile your work and activity examples for the interview; take time to remember details of your experiences that would be of interest to an employer. Formulate questions for the interviewer – “Tell me about a typical day for this position”, “What new projects is the department or company currently working on that I would be involved with?” Dress to convey a polished and professional image. Lean on the conservative side – no jeans, t-shirts, tight or revealing attire. Practice good grooming, no perfume/cologne, no jangling jewelry, take off the face hardware and tongue studs, no showgirl makeup and cover your tats! Have a portfolio, manila folder, or briefcase with extra copies of your resume, transcripts, references, and projects. Day of interview: Arrive early for the interview – 10 to 15 minutes to give you time to check-in, go to the restroom, have a cup of water and wait to be called. Arrive earlier if you have been asked to fill out any paperwork before the interview. Greet the employer with a firm, confident handshake…no fishtail handshakes and no hand wrestling. Be polite to everyone you meet there – they all count. Maintain good eye contact, a confident physical posture, use positive vocal qualities and facial expressions. Feel free to ask for clarification before answering a question. When the interview is over thank the interviewer for their time, shake hands confidently and don’t forget to express your interest in the company. Don’t ask about salary and benefits until the employer brings up the subject but do your research on salaries for your major and experience level in anticipation of the question. Interview etiquette: Interview with employers that you are actually interested in working for. Use mock interviews for practice. “Practice” interviews with employers wastes their time and prevents an interested student from interviewing with the company. Be punctual. If you can’t make the interview or are running late, call the employer. Don’t badmouth a previous employer or co-workers during the interview. Talk about their positive skills instead of their personalities. Turn OFF all electronic devices – no ringing, buzzing, ringtones, or vibrating should be heard. NEVER answer or look at your cell phone during an interview. Interview follow-up: Send a thank you letter within 48 - 72 hours after an interview. Spell the employers’ name, title and company name correctly. Provide any additional employer requested materials such as references, transcripts, senior projects, etc. Prepare for a second interview/plant visit. Rangel International Affairs Program invites outstanding young people interested in making a difference in the world to apply for its 2010 Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship. The Program seeks applicants who are interested in promoting positive change in the world and representing their country overseas as Foreign Service Officers for the U.S. Department of State. The fellowship is open to undergraduate seniors and young professionals applying for two-year master’s programs beginning in the fall of 2010 to study international affairs, public administration, business administration, languages or other programs related to the Foreign Service. The program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. The application deadline is January 22, 2010. In March 2010, the program will select twenty Rangel Fellows who will receive significant financial support for graduate school, paid internships, and other professional development opportunities to help prepare them to succeed as Foreign Service Officers. Those who successfully complete the program will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers upon graduation, embarking on one of the most exciting and rewarding careers. The Rangel Program is managed by the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard University and funded by the U.S. Department of State. It seeks to promote excellence and diversity in the U.S. Foreign Service. Program Components: FELLOWSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDIES In 2010 the Rangel Program will award 20 fellowships of up to $34,000 annually towards tuition, room, board, books and mandatory fees for completion of two-year master’s degrees. At the conclusion of two years of study, the Rangel Fellow is expected to obtain a degree in international affairs or another area of relevance to the work of the Foreign Service (such as public administration, public policy, business administration, foreign languages, economics, political science or communications) at a two-year graduate school in the United States that is approved by the Rangel Program. TWO PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS (CAPITOL HILL AND OVERSEAS AT U.S. EMBASSIES) Rangel Fellows will participate in two paid internships. The first, an internship working on international issues for Members of Congress in Washington, D.C., will occur in the summer before the first year of graduate study. The second will be an overseas internship in a U. S. Embassy that will occur in the summer before the second year of graduate study. MENTORING Each Fellow will receive mentoring from a Foreign Service Officer throughout the duration of the fellowship as well as during his/her early employment at the State Department. EMPLOYMENT/CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS Fellows who successfully complete the Rangel Program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers. Each Fellow is committed to a minimum of three years of service as a Foreign Service Officer. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
